In US visa applications, the appointment has become the step that decides how long everything takes. Appointment systems are updated from time to time, and how busy they are varies by season and by city. Even with your file ready, the calendar can move independently of you — which is why planning has to start early.

How appointments work

The process begins with the DS-160 form, followed by payment and then the appointment itself. Which dates are available depends on how busy the consulate is, and can change as new slots are released. Changes on the system side occasionally affect the flow as well.

We deliberately give no dates or waiting times here: availability can shift from week to week, and a figure written into an article quickly turns into the wrong expectation. What counts is what is on the screen the day you plan your application.

Why to plan early

The appointment is the anchor of your travel plan; everything else is built around it. Planning early buys you two things: a chance at a date that suits you, and time to prepare the file without rushing. In applications left to the last minute, the margin for error grows noticeably.

The most visible consequence of a tight calendar is that the application ends up chasing the travel date rather than the travel date being set around the application. The only way to turn that around is to start sooner.
